Close the bases

Monday letters: Base closures
Bring them home
Regarding “Close unneeded bases,” (A12, Dec. 19): If it’s so difficult for elected officials to close U.S. military bases in the United States, why not start with closing U.S. military bases outside the United States? In fact, as a first step, move those forces to the United States so that bases here don’t have to close. This would save a fortune, reduce the generation of hostility and resentment abroad, limit the environmental damage bases do, and just possibly make new wars less likely.
