Halt the Mass Murder in Yemen

Denmark, Finland, and Germany have stopped selling weapons to Saudi Arabia. The United States, Canada, UK, France, Spain, Italy, Serbia, Turkey, Georgia, China, and South Africa have not. If you are in or have any connection to any of those countries, demand that they halt weapons sales!

The U.S. Congress is considering legislation that would end or reduce U.S. military participation in the war on Yemen. Email Congress. Phone: 1-202-899-8938.

Celebrating Peace on Armistice Day #100

In honor of the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day on November 11, World BEYOND War activists organized events around the globe. From a bell ringing ceremony in Alaska, making pinwheels for peace in Oregon, to arranging white poppy wreaths in Suffolk, people worldwide reclaimed Armistice Day as a day to promote peace, the joyful end to WWI. And in the U.S., activists celebrated the cancellation of Trump’s proposed multi-million dollar military parade.

Over 70 people gathered in Nagoya for a photography exhibit and lecture with Japanese photojournalist Kenji Higuchi, organized by World BEYOND War in collaboration with Mamademo, a local group. Kenji Higuchi’s exhibit exposed Japan’s manufacturing of poison gas during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1931-1945). Watch the full event (in Japanese).

Kick Off 2019 with War Abolition 101 & Militarism in the Media Webinar

Militarism, violence, and war are pervasive in pop culture and the entertainment industry. The mainstream news media largely refuse to critique skyrocketing military spending and the vast negative impacts of perpetual warfare. Join World BEYOND War for our next free webinar on January 15 featuring experts Jeff Cohen and Rose Dyson on role of media in promoting war and violence.

New Online Course: War Abolition 101: How we Create a Peaceful World: February 18 – March 31, 2019

These questions and more will be explored in War Abolition 101, a 6-week online course starting February 18. Each week will feature a guest expert who will help you explore weekly topics through an online chat room. Weekly content includes a mix of text, images, video, and audio. New Oregon Chapter!

WBW’s Greater Portland Area chapter held its kick-off meeting on November 16 with 25 people in attendance. Long-time peace activist Michael Ellick welcomed everyone to the Peace House in Portland where the meeting was held. Speakers included Native American peace activists Randy and Edith Woodley, Dan Shea, Veterans for Peace and a current Navy Chaplain. The chapter will focus on #iobject, a national campaign to educate and allow public demonstration for conscientious objectors. The evening ended with a spoken word presentation from Young Woodley. Next meeting is December 16 at the Peace House, Portland at 3pm. For more information contact Michael at mellick23@yahoo.com or Randy at eloheh@gmail.com.

No to NATO — Yes to Peace

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) plans a summit, or at least a “celebration” in Washington, D.C., April 4, 2019, to mark 70 years since its creation on April 4, 1949. We plan a peace festival to advocate the abolition of NATO, the promotion of peace, the redirection of resources to human and environmental needs, the demilitarization of our cultures, and the commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech against war on April 4, 1967, as well as his assassination on April 4, 1968. Learn more, sponsor, volunteer, submit ideas, find lodging and transportation at notonato.org
