Local organizer and activist Margie Parker led the Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois/FOR for more than 20 years. After her death, the Peace Coalition initiated a Teach-In for Peace in her memory and has held a yearly event as a tribute to Margie’s long service to our community and her commitment to efforts for peace.
This year David Swanson, an author, activist, journalist, and radio host will speak on “How to End War – And Why We Must” as the featured speaker for the Margie Parker Teach-in for Peace. David is director of WorldBeyondWar.org and campaign coordinator for RootsAction.org. Swanson’s books include War Is A Lie. He blogs at DavidSwanson.org and WarIsACrime.org. He hosts Talk Nation Radio. He is a 2015, 2016, 2017 Nobel Peace Prize Nominee.
This is an opportunity to address a topic that does not get enough coverage in public discourse, but affects every aspect of our society. The War on Terror is never ending and more and more of our public treasure goes to support the military, with no discussion of the efficacy or alternatives. Militarized tactics have moved alarmingly into domestic policing and now are touted as the solution to school shootings. A renewed nuclear arms race would be catastrophic. David Swanson is at the forefront of thinking and acting on these issues.
The event is set for Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at the Carbondale Civic Center to begin with a 6:00 PM Social Hour with refreshments and information from co-sponsors. David’s presentation will begin at 7:00 PM.
Sponsors of the MP Teach-In include the Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois/FOR, Nonviolent Carbondale, the Carbondale Public Library, the Social Action Committee of the Carbondale Unitarian Fellowship, the Church of the Good Shepherd, the Southern Illinois Quaker Meeting, the United Nations Association of Southern Illinois, and the Shawnee Green Party.
